Don't Let This Happen to You!
It was time to replace my 6-burner range. I called the company that did the food equipment installation for a price and the info I needed. Then I went online and found one for less money. I decided we could handle receiving the unit, so I placed the order. The freight carrier showed up at 1:00, right in the middle of our lunch. He moved the range to the back of his truck and said, “Here you go.” Five of us struggled to get it off the truck and into the restaurant. We couldn't shut the old one down during lunch, so we left the new one crated in the storage room.
After lunch I called the plumber, but he was booked for three days and so were the others I called. The range sat in the aisle of the storage room for three days until the plumber arrived. He disconnected the old one and when we set the new one in place, I noticed that the side was dented. At the same time, the plumber said, “Uh-oh, this is a natural gas range, you use propane.” I called the company I bought it from to get the issue resolved. They stated I would have to order, and pay for, a new range. And they could not take the first one back due to the damage. I had no recourse with them. I had signed the freight bill, which relieved the freight carrier and distributor of any liability, and it was too late to file a claim for concealed damage. Plus, I had paid for the range, in full, before the distributor shipped it. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, the old range would not start back up and I had no way to cook.
The plumber had to order a gas conversion kit for next day delivery, but I was not able to open for dinner that night or breakfast and lunch the next day! The kit was installed and we got the range working, but the plumber stated the unit might not function to its potential due to the conversion. What a disaster! I had a brand new piece of equipment that might not function properly and has a big dent in the side. I also lost the revenue from three meals and some customers as well.
Obviously, the next equipment purchase was with a full service dealer, Eastern Food Equipment. They received it at their warehouse, checked for damage, and verified the gas type. They delivered at 3:00pm , when my plumber was scheduled to be here, set it in place, and did the final assembly. I was cooking by 5:00pm that day.
Even though I paid a little more, I actually saved money on the entire process, and also saved all of us a lot of time and frustration.
